Lung Cancer Targeting Solutions

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the tissues of the lungs and causes cells in the body to grow out of control. As cells begin to divide, tumors start to grow which makes it more difficult to breathe. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States.

There are many different types of lung cancer, which can be divided into two categories: small cell and non-small cell. The most common types of lung cancer are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for about 80-85% of all cases. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a less common type, making up about 15-20% of all cases. There are three different types of non-small cell lung cancer, which spreads to other parts of the body more slowly than small cell lung cancer. Firstly there is Adenocarcinoma, which is found in an outer area of the lung and develops in the cells of epithelial tissues. Secondly, Squamous cell carcinoma, this form is usually found in the center of the lung next to an air tube (bronchus). Lastly, large cell carcinoma can occur in any part of the lung and spreads and grows faster than the other two forms. While these are the most common subtypes, others also exist. There are two different types of small cell lung cancer (SCLC); small cell carcinoma and mixed small cell/large cell cancer or combined small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer is almost always associated with cigarette smoking.  In the United States, smoking is responsible for about 80% of lung cancer deaths in men and about 60% in women. Lung cancer affects more men than women. In the United States, the chance that a man will develop lung cancer in his lifetime is about 1 in 13; for a woman, the chance is about 1 in 16. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

There are a number of symptoms that may suggest someone has lung cancer. These can include coughing up blood, chest pain, shortness of breath, and hoarseness. Anyone who experiences any of these symptoms should see a doctor as soon as possible. Lung cancer is often diagnosed at an early stage when it is still treatable.

Small cell lung cancer is usually treated with chemotherapy.  The most common type of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, can often be treated with surgery. If the cancer has spread, radiation therapy may also be an option. Some people with lung cancer may choose to enrol in clinical trials to test new treatments. Targeted therapy is a newer type of treatment that targets specific genes or proteins that are found in cancer cells. This type of therapy is often used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. Immunotherapy is another newer type of treatment that helps the immune system fight cancer. This type of therapy is often used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. Lung cancer can be a difficult disease to treat and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Treatment options vary depending on the type of lung cancer, how advanced the cancer is, and a person’s overall health. It is important to talk with a doctor about all treatment options before making a decision.
